Gorgeous Flower Workshops in the Garden Retreat

March 9, 2024 by Alison Hayes Leave a Comment

I am so excited that this year’s flower workshops will be starting this month. They start at Easter with an Easter Wreath workshop on 24th March, creating a wreath with a moss base and foliage, flowers, and spring bulbs in it followed by an Easter Table Arrangement workshop on 29th March using beautiful spring flowers to decorate your table for Easter.

The path to the Flowers from the Garden flower workshop studio

What can you expect when you come to a flower workshop?

All workshops take place at my home in the gorgeous ‘Garden Retreat’ flower studio, which is kitted out for working with flowers. The studio has a long table and stools to create at, it has lots of quirky bits and pieces and people love to look around when here.

The studio is in the Cutting Patch surrounded by beautiful shrubs, trees, and flowers. It is a haven for wildlife and a wonderful place to be at one with nature.

Group sizes are small, usually six people (although I have another room for larger groups) and your enjoyment is my priority. It is important to me that you feel welcome and relaxed as it is a special time for you, and you deserve to leave everything behind and focus on yourself for a while.

How does a workshop run?

You will be welcomed and greeted with a drink, after an introduction I will talk about what we are doing before demonstrating. You will then make your own unique creation using seasonal flowers which have been grown and picked from the cutting patch.

We will stop around halfway through for a drink and lovely locally-made cake and we can cater for dietary intolerances if given prior notice. It is a relaxed and welcoming environment, many people who come regularly say they feel relaxed as soon as they walk through the door! The flowers are grown by me in a nature-friendly way without the use of nasty chemicals and the floristry is done in as eco-friendly a way as possible.

Fresh flower workshops

Some of the floral design workshops use fresh flowers. The Easter Table Arrangement will be using seasonal Spring flowers such as Narcissi, Tulips, Wallflowers, blossoms etc. The Seasonal Bouquet and Pick a Posy workshops in May will use late Spring flowers such as Alliums, Viburnum, Orlaya, Cornflowers and lots of other flowers. The Bowl workshop in June will have Roses, Clematis, Astrantia, Phlox, Scabious and many more flowers.

Dried flower workshops

I have many people who keep returning for workshops every year so I always try to create something new. This year we have some new flower design workshops:

  • the Everlasting Bell Jar Arrangement on April 28th, make a timeless keepsake for your home or to make as a gift.
  • the Dried Meadow box arrangement on Aug 10th where we will create a long-lasting box of flowers for your table or mantlepiece.
  • the Halloween dried flower broom is on 27th October just in time for Halloween, you can choose whether to create a short broom to go on your front door or a longer one to keep as decoration inside the house. You will create the broom yourself using branches and then decorate it with flowers.

All the flowers have been grown and dried here in this beautiful corner of West Yorkshire, in a natural way and are nature-friendly 🐞 whereas bought dried flowers have often been treated with nasty chemicals, dyes, and bleach – not here though!

Growing cut flowers

If you fancy growing your own Cut Flowers in your garden, I can help you learn to grow beautiful flowers which you can cut and arrange in the vase. This workshop is in September and has been extremely popular, it is always lovely to receive photographs and feedback from people who have attended and have enjoyed growing their own flowers.

Wreath Making

Wreath making is always popular, my Christmas wreath workshops usually sell out quickly – dates will be released later in the year. In the meantime, you can make an Easter wreath in March or an Autumn wreath in September. These wreaths are created to adorn your front door but if you would like a long-lasting wreath for your house there is a Dried Flower Wreath Workshop in October.

My guiding ethos for all workshops

Here at Flowers from the Garden, I work with the seasons and nature to create a lovely natural feel to our flower workshops and wreath workshops. We will use seasonal flowers which are grown here in the Cutting Patch and are grown in a nature-friendly way. The flowers are grown for their beauty, fragrance, shape, and reliability as a cut flower and tend to create more natural-looking arrangements for a perfect floral design.

Sustainable nature-friendly flower workshop approaches

Sustainability is especially important to me, and I am constantly looking at ways to decrease my impact on our precious planet.

I hope you enjoyed reading this, I would love to welcome you here to a workshop soon – see the workshop page to book.

Tatton Flower Show 2023

July 28, 2023 by Alison Hayes Leave a Comment

I was chosen to exhibit my flowers and flower design at the Tatton Flower Show again this year.

My Floral Installation was titled ‘Away with the Fairies’ and was set in a magical woodland where the fairies live. It had two hoops within it and each had a dried floral crown where visitors could have their photos taken. It also had an ‘Away with the Fairies’ sign which was also placed for photos.

There were 5 flower fairies within the flowers which were made of dried flowers and people loved trying to spot them all! A fairy door had flowers pressed by me.

All the flowers and foliage were grown by me in a nature friendly and were seasonal to July. No floral foam was used just flower frogs and chicken wire.

I got a great reaction to it as people loved being able to interact with the installation by having their photos taken. I saw lots of smiles and laughter from lots of people which is what I was hoping to get.

Tatton Park Flower Show 2021

July 14, 2021 by Alison Hayes Leave a Comment

Some of you will know that I created a floral installation at The Chatsworth Flower Show in 2019, it was called ‘Floating down the Stream’.

This year I’m excited to tell you I will be at the Tatton Park Flower Show in the Flower School marquee. I will be one of 8 florists/ floral designers creating their own Moongate floral arch.

My arch design is very much based on my love of nature again and is called ‘Flutter and Buzz’. It’s a natural design using flowers which attract beneficial insects, birds and other wildlife. My team, Izzy, Linz and myself will be bringing my design to life ready for the start of the show on Wednesday 21st July, the show is on until Sunday 26th July. I do hope some of you are able to attend the show and come to see our creation.

Find out more about the show and buy tickets here
